What we do?
We serve our Palmerston North (Papaioea) Papua New Guinea (PNG) families/whanau/wantoks through the following programmes and projects;
Celebrating Papua New Guinea Language Week
PNPNGCT members come together once every year with the support of the Ministry of Pacific People, Department of Internal Affairs and Palmerston North City Council to celebrate Papua New Guinea Tok Pisin. We are privileged to have the opportunity to share and celebrate our culture, particularly Tok Pisin with our Papaioea Palmerston North Community. Our fellow Wantoks, Solomon Island, Ni Vanuatu and West Papua, are invited to share this special event with us.
Bilum-Making Workshop
PNPNGCT members come together once every year with the support of the Ministry of Pacific People, the Department of Internal Affairs and Palmerston North City Council to share and celebrate PNG’s traditional hand-knitted bags (Bilum-Making) Skills with our Papaioea Palmerston North Community. We are privileged to have the opportunity to share and celebrate our culture, particularly Bilum-Making Skills with our Papaioea Palmerston North Community. We also have our fellow Wantoks including Solomon Island, Ni Vanuatu and West Papua share this event with us.
Food and Cultural Festival (FCF)
Palmerston North PNG Community Trust Members come together to set up a stall to cook
food and sell to the public as part of Celebrating Food and Cultural Festival in Papaioea
Palmerston North every year. A representative from our community will be asked to take
part in food safety training prior to the event. He or she will brief the PNG Community
members to work within the Food Safety requirement of the Event. Part of celebrating
multiculturalism and diversity in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Papua New Guinea Independence Celebration
PNG Independence Celebration will be held once a year in Papaioea Palmerston North from 2018 with the support of Palmerston North City Council and PNG High Commission to Aotearoa New Zealand. We establish committees that oversee, plan and facilitate PNG Independence Celebration in Papaioea Palmerston North. The planning usually starts in January and the committees usually have fortnightly meetings up until Celebration Day, which falls on the 16th of September - PNG’s Independence Day. It is a public event and we invite our Papaioea Palmerston North Families/Whanaus/Wantoks to come and celebrate and experience PNG’s cultures with us. See this link for 2022 PNG’s 47th Independence Celebration in Palmerston North.
COVID19 and Omicron Response and Support
PNNGCT partnered with different community service organizations in Papaioea Palmerston North to distribute Covid19 and Omicron Care Packages and supplies to families/Whanau/Wantoks. We are able to support our Melanesian Wantoks including Solomon Island, Ni Vanuatu and West Papuan students and residents in the Papaioea Palmerston North community.
